A new study may provide agents with some sobering information about their customers that they don't traditionally find on standard health insurance leads.
According to its May Health Tracking Poll, the Henry Kaiser Family Foundation indicates that approximately 25 percent of Americans reported having some kind of trouble paying off their medical bills within the past year. In addition, some people have tried to cut corners to keep their health expenses as low as possible.
For example, of those who indicated they looked for ways to save by not taking full advantage of health services, 38 percent said they relied on home remedies or over-the-counter drugs instead of going to the doctor. Additionally, 29 percent said they wound up going to the doctor but they avoided or postponed seeing their healthcare provider until it was absolutely necessary. Other common ways respondents tried to pinch pennies was by not filling a prescription for medicine, cutting pills in half or skipping doses entirely as well as cancelling dentist visits.
In addition to analyzing the means by which consumers tried to avoid spending money on healthcare coverage, the report also looked at how worried they were about the rising cost of coverage. Overall, 64 percent indicated they were concerned about paying more for healthcare or health insurance, 33 percent of which said they were "very worried." Other health-related fears indicated by the poll's participants were not being able to afford the prescriptions medications they need and losing their health insurance coverage.
The Kaiser Family Foundation also discovered that how worried respondents were was often linked to how much money they made per year. For example, approximately 50 percent of individuals polled who earned less than $40,000 annually said they relied on home remedies instead of seeing doctor. Meanwhile, just 22 percent of participants who made in excess of $90,000 per year reported doing the same thing.
